2 soldiers die in Nahr al-Bared | Printable version |
| At least two Lebanese soldiers have been killed in clashes with the Fatah al-Islam militants at the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp.
Security sources said the soldiers were killed in two separate clashes overnight and early morning incidents at the camp in north Lebanon on Wednesday during which artillery, grenades and machine guns were used.
According to a Lebanese army spokesman, troops are slowly advancing inside the camp as they try to seize the last small area still controlled by the al-Qaeda-inspired militants.
Fatah al-Islam has been fiercely resisting Lebanon's military control that covers a large part of the camp and its surrounding area, previously home to 40,000 refugees.
The militant group claims it has no direct links with al-Qaeda, although it supports its ideas.
The Lebanese military has now lost 136 soldiers since the fighting broke out on May 20. At least 273 civilians have been killed in the conflict.
Most of the camp's residents have fled the violence, but about 60 women and children related to Fatah al-Islam militants are still inside Nahr al-Bared. | | Posted By: mk - news@wilayahnetwork.com | | Back |
