India faces crisis over US N-deal | Printable version |
Indian leftist parties have reiterated their opposition to a nuclear deal with the US, saying it is a 'capitulation to US imperialism'.
Indian left wing parties that keep Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's coalition government in power said on Thursday that they would do whatever was necessary to keep the pact from being implemented.
The left parties, whose support gives the United Progressive Alliance a thin parliamentary majority, have warned of "serious consequences" if the government implements the deal.
On Thursday, Parish Karat, Chairman of the Communist Party of India told reporters, that the majority of Parliament is against the deal.
Although the accord doesn't need parliament approval, there's been increasing speculation in India about whether the communists would indeed pull their support for Singh, a move that could bring down the government or simply leave it in place but unable to push through any significant policy initiatives.
The Left Front, are key to the parliamentary majority of the Congress Party-led government. Together with lawmakers from the Hindu nationalist opposition, the communists have repeatedly disrupted Parliament over the last 10 days.
The standoff over the pact has left Singh facing his worst crisis since taking power three years ago.
