Former Pakistani premier Nawaz Sharif has been detained at the airport in connection with corruption charges after returning to the country.

The Punjab police are at the airport and they have taken him into protective custody because he is accused of corruption cases.

A security official said police had taken Sharif into protective custody following his arrival in Islamabad early Monday on a flight from London.

Security officials said Sharif was taken by helicopter from the airport to an unknown location.

Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi said that Sharif faced cases of graft lodged by the country's anti-corruption body, the National Accountability Bureau, and other police cases.
